Peak oil! Global warming! Species extinction! Have we gone beyond the point of no return?
Mike Nickerson
Mike's first book, Bakavi: Change the World I Want to Stay On (1977) explained the basic goal of sustainability. To take the message into classrooms, living rooms, community halls and institutional offices, he and his associates created an audio-visual discussion kit titled, Guideposts for a Sustainable Future (1990) and in 1993 the book from the kit was published as a standalone edition as Planning for Seven Generations From 1997 to 2003, Mike coordinated work on the Canada Well-being Measurement Act. He has served on the Board of the Ontario Environmental Network and on the Governing Council of the Green Party of Canada. "It is odd," says Nickerson, "at a time when our biggest problems are the result of our size, that our leaders maintain that further growth is the solution. Like adolescents approaching adulthood, our society clings to its carefree past. Since most adults have been able to make that transformation successfully, there is good reason to believe that our society will also find a mature state." Along with his wife, Donna, and her teenage daughter, Mike lives in rural Lanark County. He boasts two grown daughters and four grandchildren. To support his studies and writing, Mike designs and builds custom furniture.»
